Why multi-split

Several rooms,
one box outside

A multi-split connects up to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Each room gets its own wall unit and remote, so the bedrooms can be on overnight while the living room is off, and there is only one outdoor unit to find a home for.

It is the system we recommend most for townhouses, duplexes and apartments, where there is no roof space for ducting and nowhere sensible to put three separate outdoor units. It also suits older homes with cathedral ceilings or a flat roof, and anyone who wants room-by-room control without a wall unit in every room feeding its own compressor.

The design matters more than it does for a single split. The outdoor unit has to be sized for the rooms that will realistically run at the same time, the pipe runs have to stay within the manufacturer's limits, and the indoor units have to be matched so one bedroom does not steal capacity from the living room on a hot night. Greg or Shaun work all of that out at the site measure, then put the whole system on one written quote.

  • Up to five indoor units off one outdoor unit
  • Every room independent, with its own remote and temperature
  • Wall-mounted, floor-console or bulkhead indoor units, chosen to suit each room
  • Installed by our own crews, usually in a single day

Multi-split or something else?

How it stacks up
against the other two

There is no universal best system, only the best one for your house. This is how we weigh it up.

Versus separate splits

Three separate splits means three outdoor units, three sets of pipework and three power circuits. A multi-split does the same rooms with one outdoor unit and a much tidier exterior, though if one outdoor unit fails, every room is off until it is fixed.

Versus ducted

Ducted wins on whole-home coverage and on nothing being visible in the rooms. Multi-split wins when there is no roof space, when you want true room-by-room temperature control, or when only three or four rooms genuinely need doing.

Where it gets it wrong

A multi-split that is undersized for the rooms running together, or one with pipe runs pushed past the brand's limits, will disappoint on the hottest days. Both are design mistakes, and both are avoidable with a proper measure.

Our approach

Six steps,
every single job

One split system or a whole-home ducted install, the job runs the same way. That is what makes a five-year workmanship warranty easy to put in writing.

Measured in person

Greg or Shaun visits your home or site, checks the rooms, roof space, power and where the outdoor unit can live. No sizing off a floor plan alone.

A fixed written quote

You get the system, the brand, the price and what is included, in writing. If something is not in the quote, you will not be charged for it later.

Booked, stocked, ready

Units and ducting come from our own Beresfield warehouse, so the install date we give you is the date we turn up, not the date the supplier delivers.

Installed by our own crews

Trained in-house, in TOZER uniform, floor mats down and taped. Neat penetrations, sealed and capped, and the site swept before the van leaves.

Commissioned and checked

Every system is run on heating and cooling, pressures and temperatures checked, and signed off against our completion checklist before we hand over the controller.

Backed for five years

A 5-year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's warranty, honoured by our own service department. Call the same office that installed it.

Indoor unit options

Not every room
wants a wall unit

One of the quiet advantages of a multi-split is that the indoor units do not all have to be the same type. We match each one to the room.

Wall-mounted

The familiar high-wall unit. Best value, widest choice of sizes, ideal for bedrooms, studies and most living rooms.

Floor console

Sits low on the wall like a heater. Good for rooms with high windows, sloping ceilings or nowhere sensible up high, and a favourite for heating in winter because the warm air starts at floor level.

Bulkhead or ceiling cassette

Hidden in a bulkhead or set into the ceiling with only a grille showing. The tidy option for a renovated living area or a room where a wall unit would spoil the look. Needs some ceiling depth, which we check at the measure.

All of the brands we install, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Mitsubishi Electric, offer multi-split outdoor units that can mix these indoor types on the one system.

What we stand for

We’re not comfortable
until you are

Honest advice

Free, whether you buy from us or not. If the system you asked for is the wrong one for the house, we will tell you and show you why.

Our own people

Installers and service technicians trained in-house and employed by TOZER. The crew that quotes, installs and services your system all sit in the same building.

Stocked, not waiting

Our own warehouse at Beresfield holds the units and ducting, so installs are booked against stock on the shelf, not a supplier's delivery run.

Local, answered by people

A local number for every region, answered in our Beresfield office by Lee and the service desk. You get a person who knows the job, not a queue.

Multi-split questions

The things
people ask us

If yours is not here, the FAQ page has more, or call the showroom and ask.

Ask us directly
How many rooms can one multi-split run?

Depending on the brand and the outdoor unit, between two and five indoor units. The practical limit is capacity rather than the number of heads: the outdoor unit has to be big enough for the rooms that will run at the same time on a hot evening, which is what we size it for.

Can every room run at once?

Yes, if the system is sized for it. Manufacturers allow the combined indoor capacity to exceed the outdoor unit by a set margin, on the basis that not every room runs flat out together. We design to your actual routine, so if the whole family is home and every room is on at 6pm in January, we size for that.

Can I add another room later?

Only if the outdoor unit was chosen with a spare connection and enough capacity from the start. If you think you might add a room in a year or two, tell us at the measure and we will quote an outdoor unit that leaves you the option.

How far can the outdoor unit be from the rooms?

Each brand publishes a maximum total pipe length and a maximum height difference between the outdoor unit and the indoor units. Most homes are comfortably within them, but a long townhouse or a unit high above the plant area can push the limits. We measure the actual runs rather than guess.

Is a multi-split noisy?

No noisier than a single split. The indoor units are the same quiet wall units, and one well-placed outdoor unit is quieter overall than three separate ones humming away in different spots around the house.

What happens if the outdoor unit breaks down?

Every room on that system is off until it is repaired, which is the one real trade-off against separate splits. It is also why brand and installation quality matter: we install units we can service properly, and our own service department handles the repair and any warranty claim.
